Onsite Tools

 

This guide is designed to help you better understand, and use the Onsite Tools. 

Regular use of these tools will help keep your computer healthy and running efficiently.

Lets start here...

 

 

·       Ad-Aware version 8.0 by Lavasoft Upgrade Here you need this update

If your version is 7.0 or earlier! Careful to get the green arrow only!

 

 

·                   Check Disk

 

 

Check Disk will check your hard drive for errors.

This program has 3 stages, stage 2 is the longest stage.

You must see stage 3 start to verify the program is running correctly. 

The program will inspect the integrity your hard drive,

then when it is finished, it will close on its own.

The warning message at the beginning of the scan is normal, so don't be alarmed.

If the program warns you that it must restart during or after it runs, STOP!

 STOP what you are doing, DO NOT RESTART THE SYSTEM

Contact Onsite Computer Service Immediately, at 910-346-4566.

Otherwise data loss and/or corruption may occur.

 

 

·                   Disk Defragmenter

 

 

Disk Defragmenter is a utility that rearranges files and fragments on your computer's

hard drive in order for your PC to operate more efficiently (and run faster too).

To start this program select your hard drive on the list, see above.

(It will most likely be selected for you by default.) Then click Defragment.

Check your % Free Space, it should be grater than 15%.

If your free space is not greater than 25% an upgrade is recommended

 

 

This can be a long process, depending on how fragmented your drive is.

It will run on it's own, and when it finishes a screen will appear stating

"Defragmentation is complete." as below.

 

 

You have the options to then close the program or view the report as above.

In most cases you should just click "Close."

 

We only support Symantec or Norton Antivirus software, if you use a different

solution it is important to check it for updates manually as well.

 

·                   Symantec/Norton Antivirus LiveUpdate

 

Your Symantec and Norton products are updated automatically on a regular basis,

but it is still wise to check manually for other updates periodically.

 

 

This tool allows you to manually check for updates for all of your Norton

and Symantec products. Simply click Next to start the update process.

 

 

It will then contact the Symantec Server to check

The products on your computer are up to date.

Updates are done automatically, without you eeing them happen

but in some cases you may find that an update is available.

If you are given a list of updates, just click Next to start the download and update process.

Once it is complete, you may need to restart your computer, and CHECK for updates again.

The update process is not complete until you see the following screen as below.

Repeat the update process until you get it!

 

 

Simply click Finish to exit the program.

·                   Microsoft Windows Update

 

Windows update is an essential part of keeping your computer safe from security risks,

as well as driver updates and software fixes. Like other programs, Windows update runs

Automatically in the background, but it is a good idea to manually check it.

 

 

To begin the update process, click the "Express" button. (see above). A word of caution here!

It is possible to over install updates to your computer.  The safe bet is to stick with "Express"

and do not use "Custom" , unless you have experience with reinstalling software drivers in the safe mode!

After you start the "Express" updates the below screen appears.

Your computer will automatically be scanned for any necessary updates.

If any updates are needed, you may see a list of all available.

Just click on Review or Install Updates to continue. (If applicable.)

Another screen will pop up, and begin downloading and installing any updates available.

You will most likely be prompted to restart your computer.

 

After the update Always go back and check for more updates until you see the following screen.

 

 

This screen tells you that your updates have been getting done as scheduled, and no

further action is required. Simply exit Internet Explorer, and the process is complete.

 

Close this window to return.
